The Municipal Market is gaining its new appearance...

Nicosia Turkish Municipality (NTM), Nicosia Municipal Market Rehabilitation Project is continuing full speed with the understanding of modern municipal vision in order to protect and rehabilitate the texture of Old Nicosia.

The project is being conducted by NTM and UNDP within the framework of Nicosia Master Plan, protecting the Municipal Market’s old look and characteristics, the building will be rehabilitated appropriate to up-to-date conditions. Ali Güralp, NTM head of the department of Projects, stated that they have been working non stop in order to put into service of the citizens with the new appearance of the Municipal Market.

 

Güralp denoted that the restoration stage started with the determination of the current situation and the removal of the roof which is old and became dangerous after the evacuation of the Municipal Market. He highlighted that the restoration started after the removal of  the irons and timbers which carry the characteristics of the building. He also connoted that the concrete components which are useless have been removed and the construction of  the new structures has been started according to up to date convenient earthquake regulations.

 

Shops are being restructured in terms of appearance

 

Stating that the current shops are going to be restructured, Güralp emphasized that within the framework of the rehabilitation of the Municipal Market, the shops will be more organized, appropriate to the present conditions and their arrangement will be done according to the hygiene rules. Connoting that all the infrastructure in the building; sewerage, water, electricity, telephone, and storm drainage lines will be renewed, Güralp indicated that the Municipality and UNDP are going to arrange some works that raise awareness addressing the Nicosians and retailers, towards the end of the tender. Güralp added that the rehabilitation works, which are being implemented for rehabilitating the old city and providing its sustainability, are being executed by Kayas Construction and Kemal Aktunç Construction Ltd.
