The Special Adviser to the United Nations General Secretary Alexander Downer visited the Mayor of the Nicosia Turkish Municipality Cemal Bulutoğluları on 5th of August, 2009. During the meeting, Alexander Downer stated that the aim of the visit is to be informed about the problems of Nicosia and to exchange knowledge about the continuing negotiations.

Downer denoted that the local governments have an important role in the political process and added that the local governments have a direct effect for the prosperity of the public. Downer said that there is not a certain date for Mr. Ban Ki Moon to come to Cyprus but that he definitely wants to see him here as soon as possible.

Explaining that the Turkish Cypriots are having hard times because of the embargoes, Bulutoğluları expressed his hope that the isolations will be removed after finding a solution. Designating that the effect of the existant embargoes has been doubled with the global crisis, Bulutoğluları wished that the authorities will find a solution until the end of year.
