Yesterday (20-06-08) Europa Nostra (Pan-European Federation for Heritage) The Head of Scientific Council, Prof. Gianni Perbellini, visited the Mayor of Nicosia Turkish Municipality, Cemal Bulutoğluları.

The Head of Scientific Council of  Europa Nostra declared in the visit that he gives support to build a car park on the area under the walls of Nicosia which was the old training ground of Çetinkaya. The Mayor of NTM, Cemal Bulutoğluları who pointed out to the increasing  number of cars which enter in the walled city of Nicosia especially after the opening of the Lokmacı Gate, identified that constructing a mentioned car park will be the solution of traffic problem.

Furthermore, in light of the advice of  the Head of the Scientific Council of  Europa Nostra, Prof. Gianni Perbellini, The Mayor of NTM Cemal Bulutoğluları denoted that he understands  he is on the right way and spends a great effort for implementing the NTM’s car park project.

Prof. Gianni Perbellini gave advice about protecting Nicosia’s cultural heritage and denoted that Nicosia’s walls need to be saved while it is not right to prevent the construction of a car park on the area which takes place under the walls.

Perbellini denoted that the part of walls which takes place on south side are used as a car park now and added: ‘It is not enough to pave the part just under the wall. Environmental arrangements must also be done in the mentioned region while surrounding areas must be greened. This kind of work has been done in the Paphos area as well. We cannot save the historical buildings by being stuck in history. We have to know how to conserve the history and look at the future at the same time.’’
